stop programs from starting????????????

i know to stop certain programs from loading - you go to
run/msconfig/start programs and deselect them - however
its not working - everytime i start the comptuer i get the
same programs popping up - ive tried this several tiems
and its driving me crazy.

also is there other common files i can take off as well?
theres tons of stuff im not even familiar with so im not
sure if I need them or not.

Some applications are loaded from the Registry, some are loaded from
Start-up. Editing the registry is fraught with danger and should not be
undertaken by the inexperienced. I advise you to try and get someone to help
you the first time you sort this. If you have broadband Internet access
without a good firewall, you may also be infected with all sorts of scumware
or spyware. You need to download a free utility such as SpyBot and use it to
search and destroy these type of infections. There not exactly viruses, but
they do report tracking and user habits back to 'host' web sites.

You can usually safely uninstall unwanted applications from the Control
Panel, Add/Remove programs tab.
