Strange captioning behavior

W

WG, LI

I'm going along nicely in my document, numbering graphics based on the
chapter number (3.1, 3.2, etc.)

Figure 3.10 is a long thin picture that I've placed on the left margin of
the page, with text wrapped square to it. The 'Caption' option places the
caption in a text box under the picture on the left side of the screen,
correctly numbered 3.10. So far, so good.

I move on to the next page (same section), and place what I want to call
Figure 3.11. I call up the caption box, which dutifully puts up the correct
number (3.11) ready to go. I type in my caption, press Enter and there it is.

However, glancing back to the previous page, I see that Figure 3.10 is no
longer Figure 3.10 - it's Figure 3.11 also! Figure 3.9 is still correctly
numbered.

Anyone have an idea what's happening? Because of this, I have to start
numbering captions manually - this chapter will have about 60 in all. Which
means a lot of extra work regarding references, etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?V0csIExJ?=,

Unfortunately, you don't mention which version of Word is involved, here. A
couple of versions had problems with this. You might try removing the pictures
and captions completely, then inserting them again.

Even better would be to NOT use text wrap directly on the pictures. Instead,
draw a FRAME (from the Forms toolbar), then insert the picture into that,
formatted "in line with text". Make sure the insertion point is to the right of
the picture, press ENTER. Now insert the caption. It will be in the frame with
the picture, which has a number of positive aspects:

1. When you move the frame, picture AND caption move together

2. The caption can be cross-referenced and picked up in a table of figures
(should you need one)

3. The numbering will probably be less prone to "hiccups"

Thanks for the feedback - I'm working in Word 2003 with SP2.

I'll try your suggestion. If there's anything else that's particular to this
version, I'd appreciate your passing it along.

Thanks again

Nothing in particular concerning this version an captions. It does tend to have
major problems with Text Boxes, however, if a lot of graphics objects are in
the document. So the chances are that frames could help.

May I suggest that you isert (In line with Text) pictures in a Table cell and
the Caption in another cell in the same Table (unfortunately Captions do not
insert in Table Cells automatically and one has to cut-and-past caption into
cell).

You can format the Table Cell and the location of the image in the cell
through Table>Table Properties ...>Cell>Options ...
and Table>Select>Cell and then Format>Paragraph

This approach has worked very well for me in Word XP and Word 2003.
