Strange error with basic divide function

Brent

I am using Excel 2000 and if I enter a formula that uses the / key to
perform a divide function, I get a "formula you typed contains an error"
message. This will happen with basic =4/5 or with cell references.

If I open an existing sheet that has a divide function, it will work until
I make any change to the cell.

I am not using any Lotus compatibility, or other strange settings and I
have performed a Repair installation of the software.

Ideas?

This is probably not it, but the only thing I could think of was what would
happen if someone made an autocorrect entry for / (to be changed to, for
instance !) I just tried it and then typed =4/5 and I did get the error
message. However, if this was the problem, you should see the ! in the cell
(=4!5)

BTW, I immediately deleted the autocorrect after the experiment.
