strange file names being created automatically?

I

IMAGEREP

We're using a failrly large Excel file, about 22MB.
Lately and randomly, I am seeing Excel creating file names (with no
extensions!) as for example, 9CCB1700 and 323C1700. These two were created
by Excel within minutes of each other and each nearly the same data size as
the file we're working on.
Excel places the file in the same directory as the file we're working on.
Does anyone understand what's happening?

Does this files vanish when you close Excel? My gues is that
they are temporary files.

no, the created files stay in the same folder as the file we use. it's also
strange that I do not see an extension name with the self created files.
any comment?

Hi Imagerep -

How about throwing a little more wood on the fire :)

OS version, Excel version, network/local, system config in general?

Thanks for asking!
ok, keep the fire burning...
OS = XP Home
Excel = Office 2003
Local set-up
Excel Macros turned off
Sys config ?; nothing special.

note: this has occured only 3 times the last couple months. appears random,
but maybe we're hitting some wrong keys while our excel file is in use? Does
not happen (yet) using another file, although all our other files are much
smaller in size.

Okay - I thought you were on a Windows system, but just wanted to be sure :)
You've posted to a Macintosh group. Although someone might have an
explanation/fix you'll probably get faster response here;

microsoft.public.excel

I've come across it on the PC a few times but not certain enough to offer
more... May be related to AutoRecover Data files or backups.
