Strange Fixed Duration behavior

I have a question on MS Project Server that I hope you can answer for
me. Here's the problem. Let's say I have a 2-day Fixed Duration task
whose baseline starts on Monday and ends on Tuesday. Then I go to PWA
to input the actual hours.

Now I input 8 hours on Wednesday (in other words, I only start the
task after it's supposed to be finished according to the baseline),
then have the task approved and updated. Upon approval, I will see
that the task now has a duration of 3 days. My % Complete is now at
33% (1 day / 3 days of duration).

Why has the duration changed? This is a Fixed Duration task.
Strangely, if the task's type had been Fixed Unit, the duration would
not have changed. Also, if I don't use PWA, but directly input the
Actual Work using Project Pro (8 hours on Wednesday), this strange
behaviour does not occur.

Thanks.

I am experiencing somethign similar to this, except that
we are seeing resource percentage assignments change on
tasks htat have actuals input. We have support tasks set
with a duration extending to the end of the year - the
manager allocated resources at a certain percentage - when
resources enter time in Project Web Access, we're seeing
either duration changes or changes in the percentage of
their allocated time to these tasks.

I also seek some resolution or explanation to this.

Thanks,
SBelling

Andre:

What's happening here is that Project is rescheduling the work, and for some
reason is scheduling at least a few minutes of into the third day. Without
being able to see the all the task attributes and max units on the resource,
I can't walk you through the calculation, but you can look at the task usage
or resource usage view to see how Project rescheduled the task work and
correct it to your liking if need be. A good course on Project fundamentals
will go a long way in helping you understand these so-called "strange
behaviors."

You're looking a fundamental behaviors in the system. The units field
reflects the peak usage once tracking on a task has started. It does not
indicate that the resource assignment percentage has changed. If you look at
the assignment detail in a split window view, you'll note that all is well
in the planned world, and that this is simply the high-water mark for this
task. A good course in Project fundamentals will help you understand these
behaviors.
