strange formatting character

I am trying to insert a check mark (decimal=251, hex=FB) in my word
2000 document. The check mark is followed by an indent and then the
rest of the line.
For some reason, a small dot (period) is appearing before and with my
check mark. I say before and with because if I move the cursor using
the arrow keys, it goes past the dot and the check mark in one click.
If I then press the del key immediately after the check mark, the dot
vanishes.
What is this and how can I get rid of it.
It looks like this (.V) "V" was subsituted for the check mark.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Does this actually print or just display on the screen? If it doesn't print,
then I would guess that the screen font is just not very WYSIWYG. What font
are you using?

Yes, it's visible on the screen and when the document it printed. As
for the font, we are using Times New Roman.

Thanks.

Which glyph in TNR? I.e., when you select the character and choose Insert |
Symbol, what is the Unicode number of the highlighted glyph?
