strange imap connection problems

My imap connections seem to be flaky (only imap, pop3 is fine) the first
time i load outlook and send/recieve it works fine. then every time after
that my machine fails on the dns lookup of the mail server. (even nslookup
in console fails)

any ideas whats causing this?
