Strange page numbering

My automatic page numbering goes: 17, 18, 19, 18, 19, 20. Does anyone
have any idea of what would make it go backwards?

There's a section break between page 19 and page 20 with page numbering set
to restart at 18.

Thanks for your answer, Suzanne!

There are 2 section breaks half-way down page 19 (to allow for 2 short
sections with 2 columns). How would these affect the page number? I
didn't tell it to start at 18. Where would it have gotten that
setting?

How can I make it behave and display 20 instead of 18? (It's marked
Same as previous.)

I was afraid of that. Continuous section breaks make for problems because
the section in the middle of the page has its own header and footer (even
though they aren't displayed and are consequently inaccessible) and page
numbering can be restarted in that section. There are various ways to deal
with this, including inserting a temporary page break in the middle of the
center section or temporarily removing the section breaks, but you can do it
directly if you're careful.

Go to Insert | Page Numbers and click on Format... Set the page numbering to
"Continue from previous section." Click OK. This will get you back to the
Page Numbers dialog. Be careful to click Close rather than OK so you don't
insert additional (framed) page numbers.

Success! Thank you. It seems easy, though it wasn't necessarily
obvious. I had fiddled with the Insert Page Number dialogue, but had
no luck.

Suzanne, I've seen your posts before, and consider you the All-Knowing
One of word processing.
