Strange phenomenon on Outlook

I have Outlook 2003 on my desktop with Windows XP Pro. I also have a laptop
using Vista Business and have installed Thunderbird for the mail there. I
have several different emails set up with different settings.
Here is the question - sometimes the mail only comes in to my desktop and
sometimes only to the laptop - why should that happen?

the acct on each machine is deleting mail from the server ,not leaving it on
the server. in outlook, look in tools, accounts - open the account's setting
and the More settings. It's the last tab.
