Strange Symbols

Weird one! And I can't find the answer to this anywhere!

I am doing a fairly straightforward sheet showing a client estimate
based on our standard pricing structure - various lookups and basic
stuff. However I am getting two strange symbols on both the print
preview and documents that don't appear on the sheet itself. The
symbols are small grey boxes with a single vertical line in one and an
'L' shape in another - on top of each other. The box sizes bear no
relationship to the cell they are in or near.

I have tried everything - from copying formats, deleting cells,
deleting columns even copying and pasting to a new sheets and nothing
seems to work. Am I going mad!?

Any ideas gratefully received!

I'm guessing that Anne was volunteering to take a look at your workbook if you
want to email it directly to her.

But maybe you could search for objects on the worksheet first.

Edit|Goto|special
check objects

(Maybe they were pictures/buttons/... that were squished.)

If they're the only objects on the worksheet, you could delete them if you
want--or try to resize them to make them (more) visible.

Hi Hywel,
No answers on this yet? I was wondering if your printer would
be different from other printers, do you have a PostScript printer.

What language do use use with Excel (US English?).

Some things to try.
Ctrl+A then Edit, GoTo, Special button, objects radio button
was the item selected. If it was it is a picture, textbox, or other shape
but not text.

I was trying to find the doublebyte equivalent of CODE or to find
the UNICODE value but, I don't see how, and it sounds like the you
can't isolate the character to only that value in cell where you could
use =CODE(A1),

but as Dave kind of indicated it could be a character
that others might more easily identify with so try looking at the
following webpage with Internet Explorer (so you are more likely to
see the same fonts as you see in Excel).
Font Tables as Rendered by your browser

Was the spreadsheet forwarded to Anne?

If you can select the character what do you see on the
formula bar, If you can select the charter on the formula bar,
what do you see in the fontname box, and typesize box.

Thanks to all for your suggestions - all interesting stuff. I have
found the solution!

After taking a copy of the sheet, I deleted columns and rows until I
identified which one was creating the symbols. I then copied all the
formulas on the row (to Word!), and deleted the row. Suffice to say
when I copied them back, the symbols had gone..!

There comes a time when even the eternally curious have to throw up
their hands and say "I'll never know"!

Thanks again.

The described symbols sound like the "bar tab" and "left tab" symbols
used in MS Word. Both can be seen just above the left margin ruler in
Print Layout view, cycle through them by clicking on them.

Anomoly?

Hmmmm.....
