Strange Text Inserts

My wife is using a Compaq notebook with a touchscreen, Word 2003.

This issue is driving us nuts, please help.

She will highlight unwanted text and press backspace. She then goes to
retype and bingo the unwanted text appears every time you move the
cursor to new insertion point. The clipboard icon doesn't appear, so I
do not think she is inadvertantly cutting and pasting.

Anybody seen this.

Make sure that "Typing replaces selection" is checked on the Edit tab of
Tools | Options.
