STS and Proj2K2 on 2K3

Sam

Hi,

I have deployed Project 2002 on 2K3 box having
SQL2k/SP3,Notification Services,Analysis. I installed STS
too. STS first then Prj2K2. People have suggested that
Proj2K2 and STS dont gel on 2K3. Decided to try it out
myself. After creating respective users for OLAP,STSAdmin,
and using PSComplus, while trying to run STS Config Wizard
from CD I keep getting this error that "No Share Point
based Web Sites are there to configure for Microsoft
Project Server". IIS 6.0 has been configured to run WWW
Service in IIS 5.0 Isolation Mode. STS is running on a
seperate site, say, sharepoint.domain.com DNS was
configured for this and is running properly,so is Project
2002 which goes by the FQDN projectserver.domain.com I
have checked Analysis Services, created demo cube from
Proj2K2 and migrated repository to Sequel.
So, the telltale signs of things won't integrate is the
above mentioned error...is it..huh??!! :-{

Thanx.
Sam

PS: I dont use proxy. Have Lease, so proxy has been set
for direct. I even tried with fake proxy settings like we
do 4 SPS. Edited registry to force SQL connect using
TCP/IP and not Named Pipes.

I've never seen anyone suggest that STS 1.0 and Project Server 2002 can't
run happily together on Win2KServer. You do need to install the patch for
Project Server. You must also put STS on a different virtual web site than
Project Server.

Hi Gary,

Forget abt win2K3 server. Am also trying this one out on
Win2K Server at home. I feel that the main problem lies
with the authentication of STSAdmin user having local
administration rights. STSAdmin simply won't authenticate
in Sequel when I try to add STS Server from within
Project2K2 Server. I have different sites for project2k2
server and STS. But they r on the same PC. Am using a
Domain Admin user for COM+ since it has all the rights.
Even added it to security admin role in the STS DB which
goes like server_LM_W3SVC.. and ends with "Collab".

Any ideas?

Thanx
Sam

I meant 2K3, sorry. What installation procedure are you following? How do
you know the STS admin account is failing? What error messages are in the
application log?

Hi Gary,

i have been following ur ojther posts. I went abt this in
two ways. First I used a Domain Admin on Win2K3 Server.
DAdmin has by default all the necessary rights. Added it
to the Secuity->Logon and gave "dbowner" and/db-datareader
to the STS DB server_LM_W3SVC_..._Collab. Added
Builtin\Administrator user to the same with db_owner
rights. Ran PSComplus. Ran proxycfg -d -
p "NoProxy" "*;<local>" Used "iisreset". STS and Proj2K2
are running fine. Then I try STSWizard from CD. Error
crops up that "there r no Share Point Sites to configure
for Project 2002"! Changed port for site
sharepoint.company.com from 80 to 801 and ran StsWizard
again but to no avail. I have installed the patch meant
for Proj2k2 on Win2k3. IIS 6.o have IIS5.0 isolated mode
selected.

Second, same deployment under Win2000 sans the patches and
changes meant for Win2k3. StsWiz runs but says "cannot
create subweb". Here I installed both the prods on a
domain controller with ads. OlapAdmin user created
belonging to Builtin\Administrators and OLAP Admin.
STSAdmin user ->Builtin\Administrators created.
PScomplus..etc..etc done as MS said.

Common Error in either cases:

While trying to connect from within Proj2002, I get the
typical Error: MS Proj Serv cannot read from DB...reasons
coomputername\Username doesnot have read
permissions...etc..etc.

U may already have seen these
KB-331971
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;331971
Also,
KB-819640
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;819640

I never came accross "MS_ProjectServer_PublicDocuments"
folder. And how do I get hold of the patch said in
KB331971? Surely MSDownload must have it somewhere!
But off course u r the best judge. U tell me what to do??!!

Thanx 4 the patience.

Regards,

Sam

You assume too, much. Domain admin or not, your accounts require that
they're explicitly added to the local administrators group. Start with that
and see if things change.

Hi Gary,

Thanx 4 the check there. Strange things happen nowadays. U
never know who hit u and when? Anyways, got news here.
Successfully integrated STS and Proj2K2 Server on Windows
2000 Advanced Server. Made a diff. approach in the sense,
that, there were no other sites present on port 80 with
diff. DNS host header name. Uninstalled prev instances of
STS and Proj2K2. Uninstalled FPExts 2K. Deleted both
folders 40 and 50 from PF->CF->MShared->WSExt. Rebooted
each time. Installed STS. Extended the default web site.
Checked DB. Gave db_owner to BUILTIN\Administrators. Prev
created OLAPAdmin with local admin and OLAP Admin rights.
STSAdmin with local admin rights and db_security..,
db_datareader rights. Ran STSWiz which gave me details of
the site and created Public Folder. Thereafter it was
breeze. Installed Proj2K2 Server and configured STS during
installation.

Howvever the same proc is not working for Win2K3 Server.
One diff. is that there r other sites on 2K3 running on
port 80 with IP All Unassigned and differentiated only by
DNS host header. I tried by stopping all other sites
except "default web site". Am trying to deploy STS first.
Cannot run STSWiz. (Will install Proj2K2 only after STSWiz
runs.) It says that "it is unable to find any STS Site"
when default web site is there on port 80 being extended
prev.

Thanx 4 the continuing support!

Sam.

Hi Gary,

Ho..ho..ho..I got news Man, big news. I have finally
successfully integrated and deployed STS and Project
Server 2K2 on Windows 2K3. Fact I was doin' exactly what I
had done on Win2K Server except that I kept forgeting abt
the notorious number of manual reboots that I had to make.
Started the reboots after every tiny minute change,
created a seperate site with a diff. port (even this was
not working prev.)...reboots then reboot and a further
reboot after every change. Ran STSWiz before Proj2K2
Server. Whoalla...there it is fully integrated with
Proj2K2.
Thanx Man, thanx a lot. Appreciate ur effort and
dedication.

Regards,

Sam

Hi Dominic,

Apart from the patch, watch out for certain other issues.
Firstly donot try this on a Production Server. Secondly, I
had removed Fp2k2 exts which comes by default with Win2K3.
Whilst u may go ahead with this version of FP2K3, I opted
for the one which comes with STS since the former didn't
work 4 me.
Consequence: Proj2K2 integrated with STS but in the heat I
lost dot Net 2K3 and Notification Services. While Notific.
continues to run, so is Framework 1.1, but Studio.Net 2K3
(even after reinstalls) refuses to communicate with FP
Extensions. The standard error "Cannot Communicate with FP
Extensions). So be careful.

All the Best.
