Stuck in Header Hell

Help!!! I am trying to get a document ready for publication, and was just
about there when my headers started going haywire......here are the symptoms:

I am working w/ a section that has separate headers for the first page and
for odd and even pages.......the first occurence of each header in the
section is all set.....however, on ensuing pages they get weird on me.....for
example, my odd page header on page 7 has about 2 inches of space beneath it,
that I simply cannot get rid of...I have tried positioning the cursor
following the text and hitting delete, dragging the white section of the
ruler bar to resize the header box, and anything else I can think of, to no
avail........the headers and footers for the chapter in question are
completely delinked from the preceding section....

Why would an odd page header within a particular section behave any
differently from page to page??? Any suggestions??

Thanks

If the Odd Page Header is the only one in a given section, I would suggest
that the section's vertical alignment had been set to Center rather than Top
(Layout tab of Page Setup). A more likely explanation is that the header has
been pasted in, and there are excess empty paragraphs (which inevitably
result when you paste text into a header or footer). Display nonprinting
characters to help you sort this out; whether you find such paragraphs or
not, check the paragraph formatting of the header paragraph and any others
to see if any of them has an excessive Space After setting.
