Style Changes Lost

Sometimes style changes such as paragraph numbering format are lost when the document is closed and reopened. What is causing this? So far the only way we know to fix it is to copy all the text to a blank document and save as a new file.

Go to Tools > Templates and Add-ins. Have a look at the 'Automatically
update document styles' checkbox. If this is checked, then whenever the
document is opened the styles are set back to the definitions in the
template.
