Style changes when you press Enter

Elizabeth

I am using Word 97. When I change the font to something other than the
Normal.dot template default and then press Enter, it reverts back to the
default. If I center text, for example, the style changes to Heading
automatically and the font changes when you press Enter.

How can I set my font and have it not change on me? I have read the threads
on the changing of headings and styles, and "automatically update" is not
checked.

Thanks,
Elizabeth

In Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoFormat As You Type, uncheck "Define
styles based on your formatting". As explained in the third and fourth
paragraphs of
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TameAutoFormat.htm, when that
option is enabled, Word applies built-in styles that it thinks are
similar to the direct formatting you just applied. It usually guesses
wrong...

To add to what Jay said, the "Style for following paragraph" for heading
styles is Normal, so when you press Enter you get a default Normal
paragraph.
