Style conversion in Word XP

Hi. I am using Word XP and encountered a problem when I changed a paragraph
from Heading 1 to normal. I had some text in bold in heading 1 and whenever I
change it to normal style, the bolding is reversed in all text of the
paragraph. In other words, all the text without bold become bold and the rest
lose their bold feature. Is there anyone have any suggestion? Thank you.

I believe this is by design. Any attribute that can be set to "on" or
"off" applied as direct formatting to text with a certain paragraph
style will be reversed if you apply a style with the opposite default
setting than the current one. For example, if you bold a word in a
Normal style paragraph (which is usually not formatted with the bold
attribute), and then change the style to Heading 1 (which is usually
formatted to be bold), you'll find that the word you made bold are now
regular, but the rest of the words in the paragraph are bold (because
they are using the attribute of the new style). You can restore the
settings to those of the underlying paragraph style if you first
select the paragraph and then press CTRL+SPACEBAR.
