style for the following paragraph

Why when 'modifying' some styles, is the "style for the following paragraph"
greyed out? What can I do to change this?

Thanks

Thanks for responding Anne.

Possibly... what's the difference and can I change from one to the other? (I
have a table full of 100 questions and want to insert answers in a preset
style - i.e not have to format each answer individually).

Thanks!

Maybe something like this will help then?

Character styles are just that. You apply character styles to individual
characters (or a selection of characters). However, if you place your cursor
anywhere inside a paragraph and use a paragraph style, the whole paragraph
takes on the formatting. If you place your cursor anywhere inside a
paragraph and apply character formatting, nothing will happen because you
haven't selected anything. Hope that makes a bit of sense. Imagine a style
for "glossary" words, that uses character formatting such as bold, italic,
etc.; but a "body text" paragraph style might provide indentation and space
between paragraphs, etc.
