1. To create a template from a document, choose File | Save As, choose a
filename, and select "Document Template" as the file type. It will
automatically be saved in the User Templates folder. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart1.htm
2. Although you can make the template read-only, this isn't really necessary
to protect it in the way you mean since templates, unless you specifically
open them for editing (no easy feat for most users) are never opened; the
default action for templates is New rather than Open, so even if you
double-click on a template file in Windows Explorer, you get a new document
based on it. You can also customize Normal.dot if desired; see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CustomizeNormalTemplate.htm
3. By "the standard style sheet," you probably mean Normal.dot. You can't
get rid of that and don't really want to, since it holds all your
customizations. But you don't have to base documents on it. Just make the
File New dialog more easily accessible by substituting a New... button
(which opens the dialog) for the New button that creates a new blank
document based on Normal.dot. You can do this using Tools | Customize (see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/AsgnCmdOrMacroToToolbar.htm)

Hi, I want to create some style sheets based on files that already exist.
Is that possible? I also want to protect it so that it does not get changed
and is saved for future documents. How do I do that? I also want to
eliminate the standard style sheet so that it is not confused with the style
required for the single document? Help. Mary
