Style Numbering gone awry

I've inherited a document where someone's style went awry.

I edited the Style/Numbering (thanks to Shawna Kelly's site). Everything
worked perfectly, I mean to the letter. Except for one small area of about 8
numbered items towards the end.

I've checked the heading styles and the numbering - everything I can think
of, to no avail. When I apply the proper style elsewhere, numbering and
format are perfect. Not with this little section though.

Any ideas where I can begin to look for the trouble? I can't even recreate
a new style with numbering and have it work. (The section is 7, and it's
numbering 7.2 then 5.1.3 - go figure!)

Here's more weirdness:

Some of my Heading 2 (with numbering) are showing the numbering box on the
top toolbar as "in effect." Some of my Heading 2 entries are not showing
this.

Weird, but am I possibly working with a document with two Heading 2 styles
or something?

Make it stop. :)
