Style of line not being copied to next line

After a series of problems concerning numbered lists, I came across the
following post:
-----Original Message-----
Here's how tabs and other paragraph formatting work in Word:

1. As you're typing: If you insert a tab, indent, or other paragraph
formatting, or change the paragraph style, then when you press Enter, all
these settings will be carried over to the next paragraph and will continue
in effect until you change them. [...]

Well this used to work but suddenly it no longer does. I'm assuming I've
accidentally switched this mode off by some key combination since I've not
been playing with the styles menus for quite a while.

To be specific, if I have a 'body text' style and press tab then return, the
next line is also 'body text' style but has no tab.

So how do I turn this mode back on?

Any help on this appreciated.

This could be a result of having one or both of the WordPerfect options
enabled on the General tab of Tools | Options.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. However, I have the settings for 'microsoft word 2002'
which has all the check boxes cleared.

Another quirk:

Starting from a plain empty body text paragraph, I tried the auto-numbered
lists. Strangely the 1st time I pressed enter, everything worked ok

i.e. typing 1. xxx
produced:
1. xxxx
2.

But when I continued it went wrong:
1. xxxx
2. xxxx
3. xxxx
4. xxxx

From that description, it sounds as if you may be looking at the
Compatibility tab of Tools | Options rather than the General tab. The
General tab does have several boxes checked by default.

It works!!!

But I would never have believed turning on a _help_ feature would change
(actually mess up) numbered lists.

I think I worked out how I managed to turn the flag on as well. I remember
changing the number of entries in the recently used file list. I've just
notice that if you miss the spin control box by even a fraction you can
toggle one of the flags, even though you are nowhere near the white
check-box (and so you probably wouldn't even notice the flag had changed).

I just hope someone from the msword team reads this.

Well anyway, thanks Suzanne. You've saved me a lot of effort.

Jay.

We keep expecting to see those WP options dropped in each new version of
Word since they haven't done anything in years except cause trouble and
strife for users. <sigh> I'd love to see the Microsoft research that shows
that users still want/need them. Since the features they enable are not
compatible with any version of WP since 5.1 DOS, they are especially
puzzling to WP migrants.

Well interesting you should say that as I recently persuaded my father who
is getting on in years and to put it mildly, is not the most computer
literate person in the world, to change from WP5.1 DOS to word. The simple
fact is that he found it easier just to forget about WP and learn word 'as
is'.

I think there are several issues about the feature that really are not
right:

1. The situation with mixed indents that is actually a bug.

2. Nothing in the help files (I did a lot of searches for automatic
numbering, styles, tags etc.)

3. The ability to toggle the flag in the dialog box and not notice it has
changed. The designers should read Donald Norman's book 'The design of
everyday things' which explains the importance of having simple and clear
feedback when you perform some action in an application. Ironically, it was
Jim Blinn of Microsoft who recommended this book to me in the first place.
