Style Separator

In Word 2002, how is the style separator accessed? I cannot find it
in help. More importantly, though, why is it necessary? Isn't that
what character styles are for?

Character Styles can't be linked to paragraph levels, which means they can't be used to generate things like numbered lists and Table of Contents
Paragraph Styles can, but, for example, you may not want an entire paragraph in your Table of Contents--thus, the Style Separator
You can access from Tools|Options|Commands. Go to the All Commands Category and scroll until you find the Insert Style Seaparator command. Drag onto your toolbar
Alternatively, you can just select the part of the paragraph you want to apply the paragraph style to, and Word will insert a Style Separator for you

The style separator allows you to apply a heading style to just a portion of
the paragraph, which allows run-in sideheads to be displayed in the TOC
(without displaying the entire text paragraph). The style separator is
inserted automatically by Word if you "paint" a heading style onto the first
part of a paragraph (it is applied as a quasi-character style). You can also
insert it directly if you use Tools | Customize to create a toolbar button
or menu entry for it (InsertStyleSeparator in the All Commands category).
