Styles and Formatting should not automatically create new styles .

I can't believe that there isn't any option to stop word from automatically
creating new styles everything you cut and paste text from another document
when it is in a style that doesn't exist in that document.

There really should be an option to get word to ask you if you want the new
style to be added.

Is there anyone else who finds Styles and Formatting frustrating in this way?

There is such an option. Please see

should also read

What version of Word are you using? If you have 2003, and you use styles
exclusively and consistently, then you might want to Protect the document
for Styles. That will prevent any direct formatting or unknown styles being
imported with the paste.
