I have Word XP and for some reason when I attach a
template I get numerous entries for a style, such as in
place of Heading 1, I have Heading 1 CHAR, CHAR, and
Heading 1, Heading 1, CHAR, etc. For Body Text, I may
have 15 listingd for body text with various formatting.
What is happening and how can I just keep one instance of
each style? I tried attaching a template that did not look
like that (from Word 2000) and once it is attached, I get
the same thing. It is like everytime it comes across a
style, what I have to assume is an inline change, it
creates another style. Then on some of the styles when I
try to manually modify them, many of the format choices
are inactivated (dim). Does anyone know what I have done
wrong of possibly activated some setting I want to
inactivate? Please send reply to my email address above.
Thanks for any and all help.

Have you installed all the Word XP updates? If you are getting long strings
of char chars building up this is almost certainly due to a bug in an early
release. I believe turning off the 'Keep Track of Formatting' option may
also help.

However, you will still get styles appearing with <paragraph name> char from
time to time, because this is Word's 'built-in' style naming for a character
style that represents the character formatting part of a paragraph style.
They generally appear when you select part of a paragraph and attempt to
apply a paragraph style (Word just applies the character formatting in that
case, blast it). If you try to modify the .. char style you will only see
font and language formatting, and if you try to delete it you may end up
destroying the matching paragraph style too. More information on Cindy

Thanks for your reply Margaret. Yes I have installed all
the updates for XP and Office both. This is so annoying
and I have numerous large documents and the styles just
seem out of control.

I don't track formatting as a general rule. At times we
do, but most of the time we don't. Sometimes when I try
to apply a style, (for instance Heading 2) it won't take,
it always gives it a heading 1 so I have to go to another
part of the document and "copy the formatting:"to that
heading so it will be Heading 2. I always use the styles
and never have all these problems.

I went to the website you gave and I have numerous
Heading1, Heading 2, body text, etc. I don't know if that
would be my solution or not. If it doesn't create
numerous styles that current exist, it makes up new ones
that begin with the name "style". What a mess.
