Hi,

New to using Word for documenting our software. My
question is: I have written 85 related documents not
using any type of template or master document. Now I need
to go back and set the standard Heading, Lists, Bullets
and such. I set the Heading 3 style in Document 1 and
then when I open Document 2 my preferences for Heading 3
have reverted to the standard on our netword. Can anyone
suggest a way for me to format all 85 documents with out
haveing to reset Heading 3 everytime I open an new
document. I will appreciate any help I get. Thanks.

The trick is:

1. Set the style in the template, not the document. You can do this either
by opening the template itself (normal.dot in this case) and defining the
styles, or by opening any document, define the styles, and in each case
check the 'Add to template' checkbox.

2. In each document, go to Tools > Templates and add-ins and check the
'Automatically update document styles' checkbox.

Bit tedious with 85 documents. You'll know for next time.

And then, after you have updated the styles, uncheck the option again (in
each document). Otherwise, this can drive you crazy.

Depends how disciplined you are. For a set of documents managed as a set,
sometimes this is exactly what you want. You wouldn't want to do it with
normal.dot, though.
