Subforms - linked to parent

I've seen two different methods for enabling the field links between a
parent form and a subform.

The most common appears to be the Property sheet settings of Link Master
Fields and Link Child Fields.

I've also seen VBA in the sub-form's Open event set these values, which
remain blank in the property sheet.

I was wondering if there is any distinction that Access (2000, 2003, 2007)
makes between these two different methods.

Thanks!

I can imagine that there might be (rare) instances where the relationship
between main and subform might not be known until the time it is displayed.
I can't recall ever having such an instance.

If the relationship between the main and subform is not "direct" nor
"obvious" one might set the RecordSource of the Form embedded in the Subform
in that Form's Open event _instead of_ using the LinkMasterFields and
LinkChildFields properties.
