Substantial upgrade from SBS 2003 & Outlook 2003 with BCM

Hello,

Well, our existing server is due for replacement and as the absolutley
essential element of our business data is our exchange 2003 server and
BCM 2003 I thought I'd get some advice before specing a new server.

Currently we run SBS 2003 (Std) with Exchange 2003 and BCM 2003 on a
P4 2.8G with 3G memory and a 200G Raid0. Upto 10 clients hit it, (some
via Gigabit ethernet, some via G wireless, some via H/W VPNs some via
S/W VPNs) and its starting to creek.

Thinking of going to something like a Xeon 5335 2G with 4G memory and
300G Raid0. May have one or two more clients. I would like to stay
with SBS although it will probably be a new license (old one is OEM).

OK, so bearing in mind everything is currently 2003, what should I be
doing in tuerms of SBS, Outlook and BCM? What horrors await me bearing
in mind that I am going to completly rebuild my domain (various
reasons) so a new domain is to be built and the clients moved over to
it one by one.

Thanks

Stuart

After changing domain, CreatedBy and ModifiedBy fields for existing
BCM objects won't match, but you should still be able look at them and
figure out who the users were if you need to. However, if you use the
AssignedTo field (this might have been a new feature in v3/2007
anyway), old values won't work anymore.

My advice for a procedure is:
Back up your BCM data.
Create the new domain and users.
Install Outlook and BCM 2003 on the new machine.
Have the user you want to be the database owner (dbo) be an
administrator on the machine. Have them run through BCM first use and
create a database. Have that user restore the backup and make sure
everything is working.
Upgrade to BCM SP4. This will install Sql 2005 and move the database
to Sql 2005. You can skip this step, but 2005 is a better product, and
makes it easier to upgrade to BCM 2007 or more recent WIndows OS
should you decide to.
Have the dbo user ensure everything is running correctly.
Have the dbo user turn on sharing and open the database to the
network.
Have the dbo user run BCM on their client and connect to the BCM
database on the server.
Have the dbo user add the shared users to the database. Test that they
can login to the server db.

You can now uninstall BCM and Outlook from the server. And uninstall
Sql 2000, if you upgraded to SP4 and Sql 2005. And you can now install
Exchange on the server.
