Subtotaling columns

At a class I went to the teacher showed us how to
subtotal columns across. Example: you have the 12
months and want to subtotal the quarters. This is just
like subtotaling the rows where you have the 1,2,3 in the
far left margin. You can click on the 2 to see the
subtotals of the rows or 1 to see the grand total. I
don't remember how to do it across the columns. Can
anyone help me?

You could insert columns to total the quarters, and a column to total
the year.
Then choose Data>Group and Outline>Auto Outline, and you'll see Outline
buttons at the top left of the worksheet
