Suddenly, I can no longer open files using CTRL-O

In any office application, I can't use the drop down "File" and then "Open"
prompts, I can't use the open file icom, and I can't open a file using
CTRL-O. If the file name appears on the list of recently opened files unde
the FILE menu drop-down, it will open fine. This applies to all Office
applications. All was well until yesterday!

I have removed and reloaded Office, and I've (a stretch) defragged my hard
drive. Anyone got any clues? My sense is it's something in the file
structure, although I can access any file using Windows Explorer, and the
file correctly links to the appropriate Office app.

Any help gratefully appreciated!

Perhaps the following will explain & resolve your issue:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Easy Fix: Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix (MS06-015)"
to download a registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
in order to safely run the scripted fix.

Also, review the following:

If you used the OE default newsreader and the msnews.microsoft.co
server/account you would have easy access to all the ms public newsgroups,
you would then see the cause and cure, which was due to a win critical
update

Hey all:
I was having same problems this morning. Calling up files and docs from word
wasn't working, cut and paste function was dead. Used Carey's fix and
ieverything is fine.
The HP share files cause seems plausible. Other info: I recently updated
system with microsoft upgrades; over the weekend I filed my taxes
electronically through Turbotax; an error message has been popping up when I
open Outlook. Does anyone think that there may be a cause in those activities?
