Sum function when pasting

I've got a spreadsheet that has data filters on, I filter on a field, and
copy the 10 records that are the result of the filter to a new spreadsheet.
I then use the sum function for one of the columns and it returns 0. If I
click on each record twice, so that the cursor shows up behind the data, the
sum function works. Can anyone help me out?

two ideas
1) where you're pasting to might be formatted as text ... you'll need to
select a blank cell on a new worksheet - copy it and then choose your
destination range and edit / paste special - add
2) calculation is set to manual - tools / options / calculation tab

Probably the numbers are text ..

Try this ..
Copy an empty cell
Select the "unresponsive" range
Right-click > Paste special > Add > OK
This should "coerce" the text numbers to real numbers
