Summary Progress - Actual Start to Complete Through Bar on Gantt C

Hey I have checked the forum and the help file, could somebody please explain
to me how the summary complete through field works on the gantt chart when
selected for summary progress? The schedule i have taken over seems to have
the latest progress update of 4th of june 07 and then a summary progress bar
- using the complete through field as the finish- as showing october 07.
Any help or any response would be most welcome.
