Summary query, sum by

I don't understand what makes a summary query sort to certain parameters.
Sometimes when I go for a summary query the query asks if I want it summed by
day, month, year etc.. other times it doesn't. How can I make it ask me when
it doesn't it always seems to not ask particularily when I want it to. I
hope this makes sense. Thanks

It sounds as if you are using the wizard to create the query. If so, I
believe that the wizard only asks about summaries when it sees a date or
number field in the select clause. I'm not sure about that as it has been
years since I've used the wizard to create a query.
