Summary tasks

If I change the task type on the Project plan for all
tasks to be fixed units or fixed work. I notice that the
summary tasks always remain at Fixed Duration. Can this be
changed as well OR it is supposed to be at Fixed Duration
by default?

Hello David,

The summaries are supposed to be at Fixed Duration by default because the
possible assignment of resources on that task can't change its duration. The
Duration of Summaries is calculated as a function of its subtasks schedule.

I wouldn't call it a "default" since that suggests it can be changed to
something else and the summary task Type is fixed as "Fixed Duration"

Summary tasks aren't "tasks" as such. They derive all of their
information from the sub-tasks below them. The summary task start, for
example, is simply the earliest start of any of its sub-tasks.

Because summary tasks are, well, summaries of the tasks below, you should
never assign resources or costs (or anything else, for that matter) to
them.

If subtasks are kept at fixed Units it change the duration
of the resources when actual work is being entered? How
will the subtasks be affected by keeping the summary task
at fixed duration(default)? Please explain.
Regards,
David.

As actual work is entered by resources on a task, the Duration of that task
is recalculated accordingly, and the Duration of the summary task is
recalculated as well. Hope this helps.
