Summary tasks

How come when I roll up a set of tasks into a summary task, it won't
level properly? I've assigned a priority of 750 to the summary task
(the individual tasks inside it are priority 500), but it overrides the
scheduling on tasks that are priority 950. Why is that and what can I
do to get it to automatically level properly?

I'm using MS Project 2003 for PC.

first the priority on the summary task does not have any effect except
if you have resources assigned to the summary, in which case the
summary task priority only impacts those assignments.

AS for the issue with the 950 task being moved before the 500 task: Are
you using Priority, Standard leveling? (I have to ask) Are we sure that
both of these tasks are assigned to the same person? Is there Actual
Work for the resource on the 500 task?

Ok, when I remove the resource assignment on the summary task, it and
the rolled-up tasks level correctly. Thanks.

Two things you should not do with summary tasks in Project are assigning
resource to them and linking them to other tasks or milestones. Links
should only be used between real tasks and milestones.
