Project 2007/SP1

Been using Project Server 2007 for about 5 months now. I have set up two
Project Managers who have ability to Input/Save/Publish plans. Rest of
Corporation has basically been set up as Team Members. They have ability to
enter Time/Dates via PWA.

Issue now is... some of the Team Members now feel "smart enough" to modify
their plans directly. They want Project Manager Status. I'm not sure if
this is a good idea!!! Should I allow many folks with the ability to
Update/Save/and Publish plans. Especially since I have overall responsibly
of ensuring all 150 plan on our server are valid.

Is their someplace "I can take them" to satisfy both our needs??? Like can
I give them ability to open/change/save projects, but not publish???

What are others doing in this situation???

You can create a special set of users that do not have the ability to
publish. Use the category permission "Publish Project" - Allows a user to
Publish projects to the Project Server Published database using Project
Professional and Server Side Projects. Grant this permission to all members
of your organization who will be publishing projects.

If you are looking for advice, my advice is that team members have no
business opening, editing, saving, and publishing project plans. Before
they could do this, they would need a licensed copy of Project Professional
2007. And then you would need to train them how to use the software
properly. Are you willing to foot the time and expense for this? If their
primary role is team member, then I strongly recommend you stop this idea in
its tracks.

On the other hand, if these folks are genuinely project managers by role and
responsibility (in addition to their team member responsibilities), then I
would recommend you go ahead with adding them to the default Project
Managers group, getting them licensed copies of the software, and training
them how to use it well. Then you should hold them accountable for creating
enterprise projects that conform to your organization's requirements. Hope
this helps.
