Windows Desktop Search 3 beta won. I reverted to OneNote 2003. The problem
on my system, as best I could determine, is that the indexing stalls in
pause mode. Even setting priority to High and exiting all background
applications has no effect. I'm tempted to guess that it is encountering
something to index that it is unable to digest. I hope that in a few weeks
MS will have a new version of WDS 3. Then I'll probably try again,
although I don't think I'm quite as impressed with the upgrade as some of
you. Partly because I think bowing to pressure and introducing
hyperlinking was a mistake; partly because I don't have a tablet; and
partly because what for me is the most attractive feature, the navigation
pane, is still by my reckoning in its infancy.

Almost a OneNote Convert

I explicitly upgraded because of the hyperlinks between notes. MS lost you,
but gained me, as a OneNote2007 customer. Net = 0.

Well, MS didn't lose me. After all, they aren't forcing me to use the
hyperlink functionality they provide. I still plan on upgrading and
everything. What was lost was only some part of the sense that the
developer was taking the product entirely in the direction I hoped for.

Sad to hear that you give up :-( :-(
On the TabletPC I could not yet the very nasty problem of the WDS
problem (error-msg ".. not properly installed ...") - in spite of
doing everything!
But I won't back down.

Partly because I think bowing to pressure and introducing
hyperlinking was a mistake;

I could not disagree more.
IMO linking pages and notebooks and files is a true essential for
something like a notebook.
Difficult and far less productive to work without.

To the contary: IMO MS has only gone half way (the the utmost) and I
for one estimate the linking features to be rather primitive.
partly because I don't have a tablet;

This AFAICS has nothing to do with a TabletPC. It's really the same
with a desktop.
and partly because what for me is the most attractive
feature, the navigation pane, is still by my reckoning in its
infancy.

Use the one, don't miss the other.
The combination provides the power.

But you should do yourself a favor and use it.
You are really missing quite something otherwise.

Well, I'm back in the fray. Knowing that I could uninstall and get back to
where I was helped my morale. Now I have a full disk image, verified,
prior to reinstalling ON 2007. Also that blog comment by Platt that
addressed my problem. So it is no longer total guesswork. I'm pretty sure
I know why I am having more than usual problems with WDS - I think I have
way more than average number of different file types on my computer. I
figure that properties isn't something that could give WDS trouble. So I'm
changing all the text search entries besides .one files to properties,
unless I'm fairly certainly WDS would know how to index it, e.g. .doc
files.
