switch files in toolbar

I used to be able to switch from one Excel file to another, when they were
open at the same time going to my toolbar at the bottom of my screen and
clicking on the tab corresponding to the file. Now all my excel files are
lumped into one Excel Icon which does not differentiate which file it is. If
I want to click on another file I have to do it within the Excel window which
is very inconvenient. For some reason this function still works for Word...it
will show two Word icons in my toolbar if I have two Word documents open but
it won't for Excel. I do not know how to restore this function. I have
rebooted my computer a number of times but it has not worked.

I am on Windows 2000 with MS Office 2000.
