switch from pop to imap in outlook 2000

i use outlook 2000 and i have a smart phone. in the past i have run e-mail
through register.com who offers a 'leave messages on server' option for pop
accounts. all e-mail was accessible as webmail at register.com, in outlook
and on my phone. i recently switched from register.com to 1and1.com. their
tech people suggest i set up as imap so can keep on e-mails on their server,
get on my phone, and get on my computer in outlook. when i create a new
account in outlook to be imap, outlook automatically creates a new set of
imap folders. so now i have an imap in-box that receives new imap e-mails and
the pre-existing 'personal folders' in-box with previous e-mails. is there a
way to create a new imap account that uses my existing 'personal folder'
boxes? can imap accounts and pop accts share the same in-box? thank you.

No, POP/IMAP cannot share the same PST file. Each IMAP account gets its own
PST file. If 1and1.com was kind enough to collect your mail from
register.com, is there a reason why you need to keep items in your old
pop3/pst file? (exception of course being you would need to keep your
calendar, contacts, tasks, and journal items since IMAP boxes don't support
these special message item types.)

thank you for the quick reply.it's just that i have 500 e-mails in my current
in-box and prefer to only have 1 in-box. can i move the e-mails from the pop
in-box to the new imap inbox? can i reply, to an e-mail using my new imap
settings, that i initially received when i was 'pop'? i have several 'client'
folders set up now under personal folders where i move and save past e-mails,
will i need to set up new imap client folders then, too, or will existing
folders still work. is there any reason i should not make this transition
from pop to imap. i guess i was confortable with pop for the past 8 years and
am afraid of change.

also, i use mail merge in outlook, will that still work with imap? will i
still be able to open a contact and select 'send e-mail"?

IMAP folders can contain only mail items, so your Contacts will remain in
the Contacts folder separate from the IMAP folders. Mail Merge and the
"send e-mail" feature you mention should continue to work.

I don't know what "'client' client" means, but if you mean the PST used by
the POP account, then yes.

Certainly. Just choose the account you want with the Accounts button.

My personal choice would be to have both accounts delivered to the same PST.
However, I might choose something different depending on whether my phone
syncs directly with the mail server (i.e., it acts as a mail client) or if I
sync the phone to Outlook and it doesn't contact the server directly.

which i divide up important e-mails from my in-box. i am wondering if i can

Were it I making this decision, given what you describe, I'd use POP just
like you used before, enabling the option to leave copies of messages on the
server so that both Outlook and your phone can download them. It probably
would necessitate using 1and1's emial interface to your mailbocx every once
in a while to delete older messages you no longer want to keep so as to
control your mailbox usage, but it would keep you in familiar territory.
