I have been using Office Basic 2003 containing Outlook Express. If I load
Professional 2003 that uses Outlook, will I lose my messages/folders that are
currently in Outlook Express?

No
Niether is Outlook Express part of Office, its part of your o/s and IE
You have to setup Outlook in order to use it, installing Office Pro, or
Outlook, will not automatically configure Outlook, you have to manually
configure it.
If you configure Outlook, you can then within Express export your mail to
Outlook, and within Outlook you can Import your address book.
If you configure Outlook, and at some stage open Express, then Express will
download mail, unless you have removed the accounts or set it not to check
for mail.
Its your option as to whether to use Outlook, you can continue using
Express, if that meets your needs.
Outlook is more an information manager than just an email application, eg
Calander, tasks, reminders etc
