Switching from Mac Mail, iCal and Address Book to Entourage

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I'm new to the Mac; have had my iMac for 2 weeks now. I got all my old email converted from my PC to the Mac and have successfully been using the Mail application (iCal and Address Book) on the Mac. However, I prefer the more integrated operations of the Outlook application. I believe Entourage offers this view. I have the Office Mac applications loaded (student and teacher edition) on my Mac and have just tried to get Entourage up and running.

However, Entourage seems to use a different storage location for all of the mail, calendar and address information. Can I get them to use the same; so I can switch between using both applications or do I need to pick one and keep to that. If I need to use only one, how do I transfer all of the saved email and appointments and addresses to Entourage from the Mac applications.

I've tried to search the help sites but can't find this information.

Thanks for helping.

Hi Bob!

Every E-mail application has its own way of storing information. I don't
know of any that can share the same data with another application
without some importing and exporting of information to a common file format.

You can set up your E-mail as IMAP accounts if your service provider
offers that. IMAP accounts sync with the E-mail applications. Therefore,
you can read a message in Entourage on one computer and that will be
reflected in Mail on another computer (or the same computer). The same
applies to mail folders. If you create a folder in Mail in an IMAP
account then that folder and its contents are synchronized to the server
and then to Entourage.

Calendar and contacts are different. Entourage can use Apple's Sync
Services to synchronize this information to Address Book and iCal, but
many folks have reported problems when using Entourage on Mac OS X 10.5.

You can learn about Sync Services and how to use Entourage with them
here <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/sync_services_basics.html>.

Hope this helps!

Bill,

Thanks for the information. I don't think my provider can offer IMAP accounts. So it seems that I need to pick one application to use. I then have 2 followup questions.

1) Is there any disadvantage to switching to Entourage? I believe it is more like Outlook, which is why I want to switch. But you suggest that there may be some problems using the 2004 Entourage with the new MAC OS.

2) How do I transfer all of my Mail, iCal and address book information over to Entourage. Is that what the Sync program does?

Thanks,

Bob

Bob,

1) Entourage is certainly more like Outlook than Mail is, but if you're
expecting full compatibility with Outlook in terms of features and
operation, you're going to be very disappointed.

On the plus side, I am using Entourage 2004 with OS X 10.5.5 without
difficulty.

Entourage is much better than Apple Mail IMHO. Entourage 2008 is better than
Entourage 2004. Some of the other 2004 applications are better, but for
mail, Entourage 2008 is the way to go. The good thing is you can run both
versions at the same time.

Entourage will sync to the Address Book, but you will need to import your
messages.

Cheers and Welcome to Mac! I have a few tips and links posted to help new

I should clarify that the problems are mainly between Entourage 2008 and
Mac OS X 10.5. To the best of my knowledge, Entourage 2004 is syncing
just fine.
