SYMANTEC'S RESPONSE - Word & Excel problem

S

Well, that's it!! As a once unswerving, devout, follower of
Symantec/Norton products, I am absolutely flabbergasted at their
response to the problem that they've inflicted on so many users.

Instead of proposing that it's a fault/problem in *T*H*E*I*R*
software, and switching off the Office plug-in option is a solution,
they've twisted the target of the fault to having to change a setting
in a *M*I*C*R*O*S*O*F*T* product (Internet Explorer). In other words,
"It's not our fault, it's Microsoft; change their product setting".

At the expiration of existing licences, I'm off to other options,
without hesitation.

And I'll be recommending to all of my clients that they do the same.

You know it makes sense.

How can Symantec say this is a Microsoft issue when the
whole world is saying this started happening with THEIR
recent update. We got trouble with a capital T right
hear in silcone city!

I'd say they were tired of admitting the Office Plug-in was the cause
of yet another problem. lol

My recommendation is to disable the Office Plug-in rather than
lowering Internet Security settings. The Office Plug-in option in
Norton has caused myriad problems for some time now - note the date on
the Symantec post below.

Symantec claims you will still be protected by the AutoProtect layer
if the plug-in is disabled. Here's an excerpt I copied from a post in
their forums:
-----------------
Posted 12 Oct 2001 in the Adobe forums:

We have seen, in some situations, conflicts involving the Norton
AntiVirus Plug-in for Microsoft Office.

If this happens, feel free to turn off that plug-in and let the
Autoprotect be responsible for antivirus scanning. Your computer will
still be protected by the Autoprotect layer.

Our developers are aware of the symptoms you are having, and they are
working on resolutions. I don't have an e.t.a. for that.

Thank you, and please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Norton posted fix for this issue.
Norton (800.927.3991) and the first message tells you to
go to www.service.symantec.com/fixit if you are
experiencing slow operation of Word or Excell after
downloading the Norton antivirus updates.

I tried the link - just for laughs - and the Symantec Knowledge Base Library
is now dead! I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry now.

FWIW their 'fix' is nothing new. It still involves lowering Internet
Security. :-(

All the NAV owners should club together and set up a class action against
Symantec for compensation for all the hours lost diagnosing and rectifying
their problem!

I read in Microsoft news that Verisign says that several
web page certificates expired at the same time. Their web
page is being overloaded by PC's trying to get updated
certificates. That is why programs stop working.
