Symbol hang

The Symbol drop down appears to be disabled - it occurred out of the blue on my old Word 99 Edition. I bought a new Word 2002 and loaded it onto my PC and the Symbol drop down is still disabled. If I go into the Symbol display the cursor will not highlight individual characters and the highlight remains stuck on the display. Is there a way of enabling the Symbol drop down or is this some other problem

Its a Canon BJC-250 bubble jet. I've been using the
printer and original Word programme for several years
then the symbol suddenly stopped working. By
experimenting I have found that if you type in the Code
for a particular character withing the drop down box the
highlight will move to the square containing the
character but it will not move under the mouse cursor.

That's very bizarre and quite illogical. Have you tested to make sure this
isn't a virus? Can you install a Symbol by entering the code directly using
the NumPad. Try tying in a ½ symbol by Holding Down the Alt key whilst you
type in 0189 on the Numeric Keypad (NumLock on). Does that work?

Yes that works but I still have the original problem - if I go into the drop down menu for symbol the cursor won't move the highlight - if I guess a chracter code and type it in then the highlight will move and will select onto the Word page. I am not aware of a Virus - the pc is virus checked daily and I have run it through the Microsoft worm check in the last week and it came up clean

Well I can only hazard a guess that possibly the printer driver is partially
corrupt in a most strange way. Would you try deleting and reinstalling the
driver to see if it resolves the issue.
