Symbols changed to ? in PDF

Symbols (like small square bullets) inserted into a technical Word document
in the middle of lines of text are converted to question marks in the PDF.
No help on the Adobe Acrobat site for this. Symbols have been pulled from
different font groups, etc....imbedded/not imbedded, all to no avail!
