Symbols don´t work

Recently in Word 2003 (and the 2007 beta) I am unable to insert
symbols. The character map opens appropriately and I can change fonts,
but nothing happens when I click on a character. The left uppermost
square appears to be selected because it is blue, but I can't click on
anything else. Basically I can't do anything once I have chosen the
font. -- I haven't added or deleted fonts, but I am always making
changes or adding programs, and I can't say just when the problem
started. --Your suggestions will be appreciated.

If you can click on Insert | Symbol, and see the symbols, but
cannot select one, it's usually because the x-mouse feature in
TweakUI is enabled.
