symbols in word

I have a document that was created in Word 2000 Pro on a
Windows 98se computer. We have since upgraded to Win XP
Pro and the version of Word remained 2000 Pro. The
document has a number of (check) boxes in it. On the 98
computer the boxes appear correctly and print correctly.
On the XP computer the boxes appear as circles with a line
through the center and prints out that way. Is there a way
to fix this? What is causing it to happen? Thanks for your
help.
