"SysFader: explorer.exe Application Error" message!!

S

Steely Dan

Can anyone shed light on this annoying bug? It intermittently pops up as an
Error Message, and offers "OK" to terminate the program, or "CANCEL" to
debug.... The PC is slowing up, and I am then unable to use Windows Explorer
from my shortcut. My home page on IE has been hijacked, and all efforts to
reset it only work until the next boot-up.

I am running XP Home with SP2 installed 'clean' recently, Naturally, I have
run SpyBot and Ad Aware SE Personal, and deleted all crap which showed up. I
have cleaned up and defragged the HD, and run a full AV scan using Norton
Antivirus with the latest definitions - no virus found. I have checked with
MS Updates, and Office 2003 is up to date.

Any ideas? This thing is annoying me...... Thanks in advance, fellow
sufferers!

Not an Office problem. Sounds like you have a stubborn Trojan. Try
HijackThis! and the Microsoft Antispyware trial (formerly Giant). After you
download and install them, disconnect from the net before runing them. Be
especially careful not to remove required programs with HijackThis!.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Steely Dan asked:

Thank you so much for your input. I took your advice and installed
Microsoft Antispyware, which removed a lot of junk. I also did a full AV
scan with Norton AV again, in Safe mode, using the latest definitions and
with System Restore off. This revealed two files infected with the
W32.Spybot.Worm:-

scvhost.exe
taskrnager.exe

I followed the instructions on Symantec's AV site to eradicate the worm, but
could not see the infected Registry entries to remove. So I think it is still
a 'resident evil' on my PC, ie it starts itaelf again when I boot up.

Do you know of an effective (idiot-proof) removal tool for this worm??

Do I need to run Hijack This!! as well?

Thanks again in advance. I appreciate your assistance!

Best wishes

Steely...First of all. not to insault your intellegence. Check to see if you
have "check marked" the block to turn off system restore. It is located in
the ADVANCED tab in system in control panel. You must do this to get rid of
any infections from your system.
Next, run NORTON again in regular mode. DELETE all that pops up.
RESTART in SAFE MODE, run norton again.

Delete all that pops up.
IF there is still no virus found, or the you IE is still being hijacked, you
need to do some personal regestry changes. Explaining to you the values to
change will ony confuse you more.
BEST BET. ANY ad ware, virus, or otherwise found by scanning should be
checked against symantec for removal procedures. They will give you the exact
values to change and where to look.

I did not have the error code you described, but a definate browser
hijacker and it takes a little time to get it out of your system... good luck

I have Windows XP and since that message started popping up, I can'
even access the control panel or any of the other documents. I've trie
almost everything. Any suggestions? I have Norton and haven't reall
tried anything else. I removed a lot of applications such as Adob
Flashplayer and some of my photo-editing software to see if those may b
carrying the virus but, SysFader is still popping up.

Please HELP! Thanks in advance. I am in desperate need of help.

PS: I won't try any virus removers that cost money or fill my inbo
with a bunch of spam

P.S. then all is left for you to do is to reformat . Make sure you install Norton
again because it is fun to go through this at times. Norton is a Virus as most find
out eventually and you just did
