System does not respond and closes

I have Windows XP and when I brought the computer up this morning, it's very sluggish. When I try to open an document, it takes a long time and then I get the message that it is not responding and to end now. I scanned my computer for viruses and it came back zero. I also have downloaded all the updates available.

Any suggestions?
