System freezes when attempting to switch directories while saving

A default folder appears in Outlook and Word each time I complete a
save/open/insert of a document. If I attempt to change the folder the system
freezes. I've tried the repair feature with in the control panel, add/change
programs and also the re-install with no success. What happens to all my
emails if I do a hard install? And is this my only opinion at this point?

Two things to try:
1. Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows
desktop, left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect
any mapped drives that are not currently available.
