I keep getting a message that my spreadsheet will not hold any more fonts, then it locks up. Why?

I don't see a limit for Excel 4. What is the exact error you are getting? Do
you get this error after the workbook loads but before doing anything? If
not, what did you do when the error occurred? I have seen a similar error in
windows Excel, when the workbook had many charts, and the charts were
scaled. This caused Excel to have a differently scaled font for each chart.
The solution was to remove all chart scaling.
