system hangs when selecting a file to attach to an e-mail

I am using Office 2003 on a new IBM Thinkpad G40 with 1 Gig of RAM and a 3.0
GHZ processor. When I try to select a file to attach to an e-mail and the
Insert File/Look In window pops up it sometimes takes several clicks for the
system to allow me to search through and select the desired file. I have just
upgraded ( ? ) from Office 2000 operating on a much slower A30 Thinkpad where
I did not encounter this tendency to "hang" which is annoying and takes extra
time.

Any useful comments on how to fix this problem?
