System.mdb file

My system.mdb file is missing - it is not on the
Installation CD either - is this file created when Access
is installed and if not, how or where do I get a copy of
it?

I think you may mean system.mdw, not system.mdb. It's usually in your
Windows System folder.

These are the settings for the Registry (found in Access97
Help)

SystemDB = <path>\System.mdb
CompactBYPkey = 1

There is a system.mdw file on my system but it relates to
Access2000 that I tried and then removed.

Any suggestions?

You sure about that? The system.mdw file on my machine came with Access 97.

So you changed the value of the SystemDB key under
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Access\Jet\3.5\Engines\Jet
to point to the system.mdw you have, and it didn't work? In other words,
Access doesn't open at all for you: you get a message saying that it can't
open the file, and that it's required for installation.

See whether you have WRKGADM.EXE (it too should be in the Windows System
folder). See whether you can use it to create a new MDW file.

If that doesn't work, let me know your e-mail, and I'll send you my file
(I'm not about to post a binary attachment to the newsgroup)

I changed the value in the area you noted to system.mdb
(it was system.mdw). Access opens but is acting
strangely - can only save a new db using the first letter
of its name; parts of tables, forms and reports do not
load - this is where I get the Windows Registry error.

I do have a workgroup file so I'll give that one a try and
will post my success or failure...

Finally - I found the problem! Some Registry Keys related
to my trial version of Access 2000 were interfering. Got
rid of them - and all is well!

thanks for your help!
